Yamaha psr-550 keyboard – Touch response varies with humidity

by Roger
(United States)

On a couple occasions, my Yamaha psr-550 keyboard has stopped functioning properly.

The whole keyboard (all the keys) stops responding to touch. Everything else continues to operate properly.

This seems to happen when it is outside and humid.

Was wondering if there is a humidity cutoff switch or something in the psr550?

It seems very odd, but after sitting for a day, (in a dry atmosphere) it will start working again.

Weird...but that is what I have observed.

Other experienced boarders here may share their opinions.

Thanks for Reading.
- Roger

psr 550
by: Roger

Well, the keyboard has quit working, no matter what. Input from the keyboard does nothing. the rest of the system works fine. I bought another 550. there are 2 more for sale right now in craigslist. I may buy yet another. I suspect that the circuit board (sending board) near the keyboard is the culprit. It had corrosion on the microchip. It maybe finally killed it. Wish I could get access to another board. I may just swap out boards sometime just to see if it starts working again. Is there a site that even sells such parts???? Doubt it.

Outdoor gigs - Korg M50
by: Anonymous

I had problems with my Korg M50 this weekend after doing two outdoor gigs in a row. The sound would cut in and out, and I had to turn it on and off a few times for it to work at all. A friend suggested taking it out of the case and letting it dry out in an air-conditioned room, which it's doing now. I'm wondering what else other people have done in this situation.

Keyboard touch response not working
by: Anonymous

Hi Roger,

I have a PSR 2100. Out of the 61 keys, only one key- C note in 4th octave, when played along with or after D and B notes in the third behaves weird with a very low touch response.

Suddenly the volume shoots up, and you are surprised. It does not happen with any other key combination or when played alone. I suspect a poor voltage supply to be the culprit in this case. Today, when I played when the is relatively good, it works fine. Still not able to figure out what the real cause is.

Regards,
Suneer

Yamaha PSR PSR-550 Keyboard
by: Anonymous

Hi Roger im james..

As i experience repairing of that kind of problem..the couse of your problem is the change of humidity from hot to cold..that can cause moisture of the unit, you know moisture can cause short circuit...you need to check the internal of the unit the board i mean so to avoid rust of the parts.

Keys not working because of Humidity
by: Peter

That could happen. Excessive humidity can cause problems to electronic keyboards. This is because the moisture can cause corroding in the electronics contacts.

But it is also possible that your keyboard's key is not working for some other reason.

Keys not working because of Humidity
by: George

This is what I have experienced with my 61 key keyboard. One of the keys has stopped working, doesn't make any sound when I press the key.

I haven't dropped any liquid on it nor there is lots of dust in the room.

But I moved to the basement almost a year back where it gets really it gets humid in summer and dry in winter, and now I am having this problem with the keys.

I think it is the humidity which has caused something to the electronic part inside.

Yamaha psr-550 keyboard ? Touch response varies with humidity
by: Charlie

Hi Roger,

I am not sure if there is any humidity cutoff switch in the Yamaha psr-550 but the excessive humidity can affect the internal circuitry causing your psr550 keyboard to behave weirdly.

As far as possible, I avoid keeping my PSR keyboard outside...where the temperature could be high and it can get exposed to direct sunlight.

Thx
