I agree that for the Yamaha home pianos, you need to keep in mind what action you are paying for.

You may want to read more here on Yamaha key actions: GHS vs. GH/GHE vs. GH3

The Yamaha YDP160 home piano has a much better action than the YD140.

I thought this thread was for home pianos under $1500 and we are mixing posts here.

For home pianos under $1500, it's about Casio Celviano and the Yamaha YDP pianos.

The Celviano series from Casio has nice looking cabinets, more for your living room where matching the existing decor is important. I think the Celviano's feel and sound similar to the Privia series pianos.

The Yamaha YDP are console style pianos and look similar to the Celviano but you need to be mindful of the key action.

The GHS action is Yamaha's cheapest action, so if possible go in for the GHE, which is a much better action.

If had to use a piano for stage, it would be the Yamaha CP33. For home use, the Yamaha P155 is apt.

If you are looking at the traditional upright types of piano, have a limited budget, and want it for home use, then the Casio Celviano AP-220 also looks very good.

With a budget of $1,500 I think one would be looking at the Yamaha or the Roland.

Kawai is ruled out (more expensive) and you shouldn't get into a non-Alpha type key action.

Another thing is that you need a good balance of controls.

If it is for home use, fewer controls are okay but for stage use, you definitely need more. You don't want a piano where you have to press a button multiple times to get to the selection that you want, not suitable for stage use at all.

I think if one is ready to spend $1500, then might as well spend around $400 more and consider the Roland FP-7F, which is a totally different league altogether.

Other than that, the Yamaha CP33 and Roland FP4 pianos are good. I like the sounds in the CP33 more but the action on the Roland FP4 is better.

Another option is the Kawai MP5 piano, which may not have the best sounds but does come with lot more sounds compared to the CP33 or the FP4.

I think one should be willing to spend a couple of hundreds above $1500 if you are getting an excellent buy.

I am a professional stage player so I usually look at only the pro series of stage pianos.

When I say pro-keyboard I mean keyboards that have:

  • 1/4" and XLR outputs

  • Do not use external power supplies

  • Do not have built in speakers

  • Some Pro-Keyboards like the Yamaha CP330 do come with built-in speakers though (some exceptions do exist).

I would choose the Yamaha CP33 piano if you are going to use it more for onstage performances. It comes with various controls that can be easily setup for stage use.

In this price range, I think that the Roland FP4 digital piano is the best.

If I have to choose one from Yamaha, then the Yamaha P155 is another one that I like in this price range.
