Looking for a Digital Piano Keyboard with 88 weighted keys - Please suggest Keyboard Brands / Models

88 Key Digital Piano Keyboard

88 Key Digital Piano Keyboard

I just discovered your website. AWESOME!

I have been looking for a digital piano-keyboard for like 3 weeks and am getting more and more confused as I go.

I am looking for a piano-keyboard with 88 keys that are weighted.

I want a great sounding grand piano as sometimes I would just want to play it as a grand piano. Also I would like to be a one man band. I like classic country and 50's rock and roll. I am a bit older and this is the music I grew up with. I also want the unit to have a drum beat in it and the easier for me to hit a button and have a country band or a rock band great.

I am basically a nerd but I do have certain amount of intelligence so I could learn a bit of programming if need be. Price is ok up to approx. $2500 but would prefer to spend less.

I do want great sounds to sound very professional. I have looked at Yamaha and Korg. But am open to whatever you think might be best for me. I also do sing and would need a mike and amplifier, and maybe an extra speaker.

Hope you can suggest a brand or 2 and a model or 2 for 88-key digital piano-keyboard that you think might work for me.

Thanks so much.
Dave.

Suitable Brands / Models for Digital Piano Keyboard with 88 weighted keys
by: Suresh

Hi Kim,

"Touch sensitive" does mean that the sound (volume) changes depending on the pressure applied. This is available on most keyboards priced upwards of $150 or so.

But in this case the teacher is asking for "weighted keys", which is different from Touch sensitivity. Most 61 key keyboards have thinner and lighter keys, as opposed to the heavier keys that you find on a real piano.

A music keyboard with "weighted keys" means that, with some mechanism the keys are made heavier so that it feels like the keys on a real piano when you play them.

You can check out this link: Best Keyboard & Pianos for Various Price Ranges for options under $400.

My daughter is just starting piano lessons and her piano teacher wants her to use a music keyboard that has "weighted keys" so that the sound changes depending on pressure applied.

Is that what is meant my "touch sensitive" and if yes could you tell me the Piano models available for less then $400.

Thanks,
Kim

In the 700-800 dollars range, you can go in for the Yamaha DGX640 88-Key Portable Hammer-Action Keyboard.

Another expensive option is Korg Pa588 Professional 88-Key Arranger Keyboard (2000 dollars range).

There are other better arranger workstations (and well below the price you mentioned) like the Yamaha psr-s910, Korg PA series, Roland GW8 arranger workstation but these are 61 keys. But these have some amazing built-in rhythms which can be useful for playing as a one-man band.

Other options include Roland Fantom and Yamaha Motif, but then it involves programming. You will have to setup the various accompaniment patterns and save them so that you can recall them when required.

As for your amplifier need, you can go in for a Roland KC series amp or a Behringer keyboard amp.
