Why so many different variations of a Keyboard?

As you seek more and more information on keyboards you will hear lots of words like keyboards, home keyboards, arranger keyboards, synthesizers, workstations, samplers etc. So why do you have so many different instruments available in the market and who uses them? To answer this question, you need to understand the growth of a keyboard player.

• Learning Stage – This is normally the most exciting of all the stages that you will pass through in the course of your musical journey. You will be really charged up and eager to learn. You would want to have a keyboard/piano of your own as soon as possible and once you have an instrument, you will sincerely practice all your lessons and would expect your teacher to teach you something new in every class.

But even with so much enthusiasm, it would still be a good idea to spend some time figuring out what exactly you want and how much you are willing to spend before you set out to purchase an instrument. You definitely need to keep an eye on the cost as some of these instruments can be really expensive and you may not need it at this stage.

If you are looking for an electronic keyboard, the instrument you are most likely to buy will be one of the Casio CTK series or the lower models in the Yamaha PSR series. These keyboards are known as Home keyboards or Arranger keyboards. Home keyboards have lot of features to keep you busy with your learning process for quite some time and are reasonably priced.

If you are looking for a Piano, then you have got a lot of choices as there are many manufacturers who make good pianos - Yamaha, Korg, Kawai, and Roland are just some of the names. But since some of these pianos are really expensive, most beginners go in for a digital stage piano, which is a far more affordable option.

• Performing Stage – At this level you will, in all probability, be playing for an audience and you will need professional sounds in your keyboard. The home keyboard which you had bought earlier will not be enough! You will even have to buy keyboard amplifiers to get a much bigger sound, in addition to buying accessories like cases and stands.

You will need a professional arranger keyboard if you intend to play as a one man band or if you are not going to have any percussionist to accompany you. The professional arranger keyboards have such superior built in accompaniments and sounds that you can do a show all by yourself, if you can sing as well. Yamaha’s higher models in the PSR series, Technics and Korg have some very good sounding professional arranger keyboards.

If you have a proper band with a drummer, bassist and guitarist then you don’t need an arranger keyboard, a synthesizer should do the job. Synthesizers do not have built in accompaniments but they have very good sounds. You can tweak most of the sounds and create new ones.

• Composing and Arranging Stage – When you reach this stage, you will need to work with lots of sounds and effects. You will need to record acoustic instruments and vocals. You will need an instrument which will let you record many tracks and let you edit your tracks easily. This is where you need things like workstations, samplers and synthesizers.

A Workstation is a portable studio, which lets you do everything on one single instrument. It serves all your recording needs! But once you reach this stage your ears are constantly in the lookout for new sounds and that is the reason you end up with additional gears like samplers and synthesizers in your studio. Besides, to stay competitive, you need to have the latest sounds in your repertoire. Of course, if you are getting paid for your work, you should not mind spending on new instruments.

So you can see that the various keyboard instruments serve some purpose and they are needed during the various stages in a keyboard player’s career. Further, down the line if you get really serious about Keyboards, you will definitely end up owning multiple keyboards.
