I want to understand what a midi channel is?

by Peter
(Leeds, UK)

Hi,

I want to understand what a midi channel is. Do I need to worry about it if my keyboard connection with the computer works fine?

I did a bit of reading on Wikipedia but it is very vague, I did not really get what it was trying to convey.

Is there any particular use of a midi channel?

What are MIDI channel messages - Connecting midi keyboard to computer or other midi devices NEW
by: Ben

Actually the communication between MIDI devices is known as MIDI channel messages.

If you play some notes on a midi piano keyboard (or controller), what it does is that it transmits MIDI channel messages from its MIDI Out connector.

Information like Note-On, Aftertouch, Note-Off, Program Change, User turning the pitch-bend, are all examples of midi channel messages.

What is a midi channel? Connecting MIDI keyboard to computer or other midi devices. NEW
by: Suresh

MIDI instruments, when they talk to each other, the information is passed over what is known as midi channels. As per the MIDI standard, MIDI compatible instruments can use up to 16 MIDI Channels (1-16) for communication.

When you play a MIDI piano-keyboard that is connected to a computer or another midi device, lot of information is passed so that the other device can recognize it.

Information like which note is to be played, with how much velocity, whether you used pitch-bend or not, etc., all this is passed over MIDI Channels.
