How can I upgrade / revamp my old acoustic grand piano to a digital piano?

by Bror Arnfast
(Denmark)

What is the smallest / shortest 88 key digital piano? I want to find one that fits inside my grand piano.

It is old enough and bad enough to be renovated and I thought I would do it by installing a digital instead of the keys.

Then I would take out the strings and put my midi stuff and amplifiers there.

Anybody have ideas?

Hi Bror,

Sounds interesting! Most player pianos have a midi setup in addition to the strings. So the keys you play can also send midi messages, though I am not sure how that setup is done. Maybe a piano technician could be able to help.

If you are planning to use a portable digital piano and then replace the strings with your midi / amp setup, it could work. It's just that you will need to find a DP with the appropriate width to fit in the slot for keys.

Another alternative is to use an 88-key midi controller (they are less wide) and could fit properly in the keys slot, but then you will have to include a computer / laptop in your setup behind (and software like Reason or anything else).

Please let us know how your experiment pans out.
