So what do you do next?
Obviously, you go to your nearest dealer and try to find out more about a suitable piano. Of course, you can practice for some time on a borrowed keyboard, if you can manage to get one, but you will need to get yourself a good Piano if you are serious about learning the Piano. So what do you do? Forget about it? Probably not! Have a look at Digital Pianos!
Is it a good alternative?
Digital Pianos are designed to serve primarily as an alternative to a traditional acoustic piano. You will find that most of them have the looks of an acoustic piano with models resembling upright and grand pianos. But what about the sound?
High quality samples
This is where a Digital Piano differs from an acoustic one. Unlike acoustic pianos, where the sound is produced because of hammers striking against the strings, digital pianos produce sound electronically; it makes use of samples to produce the sound. The more expensive an instrument is, the better the sound samples are going to be and you can notice that in the quality of the sound produced; top of the line Pianos use extremely high quality samples resulting in excellent sounds. The samples used need to capture the various nuances and dynamics of the instrument and play them back faithfully.
Keys Action
This is also the reason why the feel of the keys is different on an acoustic piano as you can actually feel the hammers striking against real strings. Besides the keys on the bass side or the left side are harder to play and it gets lighter as you move towards the right of the Piano. Most of the virtuoso pianists prefer to play an acoustic piano precisely for this reason.
But the Digital Piano manufacturers have realized this challenge and the models nowadays almost resemble the actual acoustic piano action. You can hear various names for the key action like semi-weighted, weighted, hammer, and graded hammer action; the best being the graded hammer action. The semi-weighted and weighted actions are normally used in the entry level models. Please go through this article to know more about the various Key Actions
Looks

Some of them even come with a remote control so that you can play any of your favorite song using the built-in player which then automatically starts playing the keys, that is you do not have to physically sit at the piano.
Finally
A Digital Piano does give you a cheaper alternative to an acoustic Piano. It also gives you relatively portable models, just in case, if you move houses quite frequently. Though some Pianists may debate the key action of a Digital Piano, the more expensive ones do closely emulate an acoustic piano in terms of the sound produced and the feel of its keys. The top of the range models even come with the grand piano cabinet and finish to give it that majestic look.
