Can you use Midi Controller to Record Audio like Vocals, Guitar on Computer?

by Viky
(Newcastle, UK)

I want to know if I can record audio like Vocals, Guitar and other instruments on my Computer using a Midi keyboard or Controller.

I'm kind of new to MIDI and music technology. I just bought a midi keyboard and a snowball microphone. The software that I use on my computer is Apple's Garageband.

I am trying to figure out how to record vocals using midi in Apple's Garageband. I had seen in one of the "Cosby episode" where Stevie Wonder puts the family's vocals into his keyboard and plays them.

Is that possible?

I am just starting out so I am not trying to create anything serious here. Just want to know if it is possible to Record Audio like Vocals, Guitar on Computer using Midi.

Use Midi to Record Audio like Vocals, Guitar on Computer
by: Suresh

I am not sure if I get the question correctly but here is what I know about Midi.

MIDI controllers don't have sound generating engine so they cannot generate sounds of their own. The sound is generated by the computer or the Audio interface, if it is used.

You do get vocal synthesizers (Korg and Roland has some) that can record your vocals which can then by played using the keys. They are not pure midi controllers though; they are synthesizer keyboards and are much expensive compared to midi controllers.

Hope this helps!
